Ballarò Buskers Festival

Ballarò Buskers Festival

Palermo, Italy

About

The Ballarò Buskers Festival is a free, open-air festival held each October across public squares in the historic Ballarò market in Palermo, Italy. Born from a local grassroots network determined to revive a neighbourhood long associated with abandonment and crime, the festival combines international street arts and contemporary circus performances with a civic education programme. Local adolescents actively help organise and run the event, working alongside professional artists. The festival operates on principles of free entry, accessibility and inclusion, using performance languages that require no translation. Beyond its artistic programme, it functions as community infrastructure, giving residents a platform to reclaim public space and address local social issues. It has grown into one of Palermo's largest annual outdoor arts events, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each year.
