Festival Internacional Cervantino

Festival Internacional Cervantino

Guanajuato, Mexico

About

The Festival Internacional Cervantino is Latin America's preeminent international arts festival, held annually every October in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Guanajuato. Originating from Enrique Ruelas' 1953 street theater performances of Cervantes' entremeses, it was officially established in 1972 and has grown to welcome over 3,400 artists from 30+ countries. The festival spans 40+ venues across the city—from intimate baroque churches to grand colonial theaters like Teatro Juárez and massive public esplanades—transforming Guanajuato's historic alleyways into a living stage. Programming encompasses music, opera, dance, theater, visual arts, acrobatics, circus acts, and street performance. Fifty percent of events are free, emphasizing accessibility for all ages and communities. The festival uniquely serves youth through dedicated youth programs, discounted student tickets, and educational workshops, while maintaining its roots in community engagement through initiatives like the Ruelos Project supporting disadvantaged communities. Notable for hosting international guest countries annually and bridging traditional and contemporary artistic expressions, it stands as one of the world's four major arts festivals.
