Founded in 1998, the Gnaoua and World Music Festival is an acclaimed international celebration held annually in June across Essaouira's medina and public squares. The festival uniquely fuses traditional Gnawa master musicians (maâlems) with jazz, rock, blues, reggae, and world music artists in spontaneous collaborations. Beyond music performances featuring acrobatic dancing and street spectacles throughout the city, the festival offers workshops in Gnaoua traditions, cultural forums, and community learning experiences. It attracts 400,000-500,000 visitors and has been recognized by UNESCO for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, making it one of the world's largest festivals of its type.
