International Theatre and Dance Festival Alter Ego

About

Founded in 2008 by director Nikolay Georgiev, Alter Ego is a leading platform for alternative and experimental theatre in Bulgaria with strong international recognition. The five-day festival in central Sofia presents curated alternative stage works from Europe and beyond. Its multi-layered format includes a performance programme of 7-12 productions featuring strong authorial vision and experimental theatrical language; a discussion programme with scholars, anthropologists, and artists addressing contemporary alternative theatre; and workshops for professional development and knowledge exchange. The festival contributes to the creative economy through international exchange, networking, and co-production opportunities, positioning itself as a hub for artist visibility and mobility. All events are free, ensuring broad public access and cultural inclusion.
