Peculiar Families Festival is a contemporary circus festival held in Split, Croatia, organised by the ROOM 100 collective. The festival's name references the creative and complex community of circus artists and their audiences: contemporary circus art is treated as much more than an art form, with the specific requirements for physical capacity, the interdisciplinary character between performance and conceptual art, and the conditions of production often characterising not only the work but also the life of circus artists. For these reasons, vigorous, intimate and trustworthy cooperation between collective members is central to the festival. The magic of circus is when that energy transfers to the audience, and the festival's goal is to create precisely that effect, breaking down borders between audience and artists, city and circus tent, family as community and necessity, recognising the complexity and intimacy of everyday human relationships.
