Namur, Belgium
Namur en Mai is an annual festival of fairground and street arts held in the city centre of Namur, Belgium, every May. It has been running since 1996 and is organised by the cultural federation Pastoo, with support from the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. For three days the streets and squares of Namur become an open-air stage, with a scenography inspired by early twentieth-century fairground aesthetics. The programme includes circus, theatre, magic, storytelling, music, cabaret and other shows, for children and adults alike. Many performances are held in public space and are free to attend, while some are ticketed. The festival aims to make performing arts accessible to a broad public. Alongside the main event, it runs cultural mediation projects and a programme of shows for audiences who are unable to attend, such as people in care homes, hospitals or prisons.
