The Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen is an annual international theatre festival held in Recklinghausen, in the Ruhr region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is one of the oldest and largest theatre festivals in Europe. Its origins lie in the winter of 1946/47, when Hamburg theatre companies performed in Recklinghausen in exchange for coal under the motto "Kunst gegen Kohle" (Art for Coal). The festival is organised by the city of Recklinghausen and the trade union confederation Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund, and its main venue is the Ruhrfestspielhaus. The programme presents productions by European and international theatre companies, complemented by concerts, exhibitions and political events. Since the 1990s the festival has had a strong European and international orientation, and its history has been shaped by themes of solidarity, exchange and internationality. It addresses a broad and diverse audience.
