The Malta Carnival is a Catholic religious celebration with roots dating back hundreds of years. Traditionally, Carnival is the last indulgence before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday, with the word carnival deriving from 'carne vale', meaning 'meat allowed'. Today, the carnival fuses old and modern traditions, bringing a festive party atmosphere to Malta and Gozo. The celebration features elaborate costumes, massive colourful floats with PA systems, food, dances, parades, music, and competitions spread across five full days of continuous celebrations.
